Subject: 1988/89 CSD Committees
CSD COMMITTEES FOR 1988/1989
Many of you have already been contacted about serving on the following
CSD committees. I hope the following committee membership suggestions
meet with everyone's approval. Please let me know if you have
concerns or problems with any of this. The committee structure is
changed a bit for the coming year. The major changes are:
1) The PhD committee will have two subsections with some overlap in
membership. One subsection will mainly be concerned with recruiting,
welcoming new students, and recommending policy for the PhD program.
The other subsection will deal solely with the PhD admission process
for 1989/1990. Mike Genesereth has agreed to be the overall chair and
will also be the chair of each subsection.
2) The "comprehensive committee will have three subsections---one for
each part of the exam (theory, applications, and systems). The
different subsection chairs should arrange to meet as an entire group
at least once to set overall exam policy, but then each can deal with
its part of the exam separately. I have recommended "chairs" for each
subsection and will work with these chairs to help them staff the
committees.
3) The curriculum committee will also be asked to make recommendations
about CSD teaching load. (Recall that it was decided at a recent
faculty meeting to look at the teaching load situation again and to
make recommendations about it.)
The chairs of all committees should confirm that their members have
received this note and are ready to serve. It would be appreciated by
many if committee meetings could be advertised so that interested
members of the Department could attend.
I presume that the student bureaucrats will be arranging for the
appointment of student members to these committees and will inform the
committee chairs.
To all others to whom this message comes, GREETINGS! If you would be
willing to serve on any of these committees please contact the chair,
cc-ing me.
